Sony announces more indie partnerships, Blacklight Retribution and Primal Carnage Genesis for PS4

At GDC 2013 Sony has decided to focus on its relationships with indie developers, revealing free-to-play PC shooter Blacklight: Retribution and episodic adventure Primal Carnage: Genesis are coming to the PlayStation 4. That makes three self-published games destined for Sony's next-gen console, including Jonathan Blow's The Witness. Blacklight: Retribution is also making use of Sony's Pub Fund for marketing support, the first game on the platform to do so. Sony hasn't forgotten about its existing platforms however, also announcing Spelunky and Divekick for PS3 and Vita, Metrico for Vita, and the handheld debut of Limbo on Vita later this year. Check after the break for a press release that details the announcements, plus trailers for several of the new games.

Why Obama, a Christian, hosts a Passover seder each year at White House

Monday's Passover seder at the White House will be the fifth Obama has hosted. No, he's not Jewish, but he recently elaborated on why the story of the Exodus speaks to a universal 'yearning' ? and to him personally.

For the fifth time since he moved into the White House, President Obama will host a Passover seder Monday evening, a ritual that is celebrated by Jewish families throughout the world and that the president, a Protestant Christian, says speaks personally to him. ??

The gathering of about 20 people in the elegant family dining room?on the first floor of the White House is expected to include first lady Michelle Obama as well as presidential daughters Malia and Sasha. ??

Mr. Obama is believed to be the first president to host seder dinners at the White House. America has not had a Jewish president.

During his speech to an audience of young people at the Jerusalem International Convention Center last Thursday, the president spoke at length about what the celebration of the Jews' escape from slavery in Egypt means to him. ?It?s a story of centuries of slavery, and years of wandering in the desert; a story of perseverance amidst persecution, and faith in God and the Torah. It?s a story about finding freedom in your own land,? Obama said. ?It?s a story that?s inspired communities across the globe, including me and my fellow Americans."

The president told his audience of young Israelis that the Passover story has a special resonance to him, as an African-American whose early years were not rooted in any one place. ?To African Americans, the story of the Exodus was perhaps the central story, the most powerful image about emerging from the grip of bondage to reach for liberty and human dignity ? a tale that was carried from slavery through the Civil Rights Movement into today,? he said. ?For me, personally, growing up in far-flung parts of the world and without firm roots, the story spoke to a yearning within every human being for a home."

The?seder tradition began in 2008?when candidate Obama unexpectedly joined a seder arranged by three young Jewish aides in the basement of a Sheraton hotel in Harrisburg, Pa., during some of the darkest days of his campaign. The organizers included Eric Lesser, who worked on trip logistics; campaign videographer Arun Chaudhary; and Herbie Ziskend, who did campaign advance work. All have since left the Obama team but are expected to attend Monday night?s dinner.

After the pledge that ends the traditional seder, ?next year in Jerusalem,? candidate Obama raised his glass and declared, ?Next year in the White House,?recounts the Jewish Daily Forward. At the time, he was still engaged in a ferocious primary battle with Hillary Rodham Clinton.?

Those who have attended the White House seders say they blend traditional and new aspects. On an untraditional note, the event includes the reading of President Abraham Lincoln?s Emancipation Proclamation. More traditionally, Malia and Sasha in the past have taken on the traditional duties of Jewish children, asking four questions about the evening?s purpose and searching for a piece of matzoh that has been hidden at the White House.

The president?s speech last week in Israel revealed that his daughters are a key reason he holds the seders at the White House. ?I did so because I wanted my daughters to experience the Haggadah, and the story at the center of Passover that makes this time of year so powerful," he said.?

Like the Obamas and their daughters, not all attendees at the seder will be Jewish. For example, Jen Psaki?s first seder was the dinner in Harrisburg while she was serving as the Obama campaign?s traveling press secretary. She has since been pictured at White House seders. Ms. Psaki, now the State Department spokesman, learned the Exodus story at Catholic school.

On-Demand Car Service Uber Finally Embraces Microsoft With A New Windows Phone App

windows-uberI'm a little embarrassed to admit how reliant I've become on Uber when I'm traveling -- most regular cab drivers seem to find me terribly repellant -- but now the service is now is working to expand its reach even further. The folks behind the on-demand car service announced earlier today that Windows Phone users now have a native app of their own, albeit one that doesn't look quite as pretty as what iOS and Android users are privy to.

Apollo Group seeks to attract new students as enrollments fall

By Prateek Chatterjee and A. Ananthalakshmi

(Reuters) - University of Phoenix owner Apollo Group Inc plans to offer more non-degree courses in a bid to attract students after enrollments to the biggest for-profit college in the United States fell the most in four quarters.

Apollo's shares rose 9 percent after the company reported a better-than-expected profit for the second quarter, but analysts said the rally was likely to be short-lived as new student numbers lagged.

Shares of Apollo have fallen about 70 percent since the beginning of 2012, making the stock cheaper than most of its peers. The stock is valued at 6.62 times its expected earnings for the next four quarters, compared to an average of 8.06 for its peers, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Enrollments at Apollo and the rest of the U.S. for-profit education industry have been hit after government scrutiny revealed fraud related to financial aid, worryingly high student debt loads and low rates of graduation and job placement.

Apollo said student sign-ups fell 20 percent in the second quarter ended February 28. The decline was bigger than the 13 percent fall that Wall Street had expected, Robert W. Baird analyst Jeffrey Mueler said in a note.

Third-quarter enrollment rates have been similar so far this quarter, Chief Executive Greg Cappelli said on a post-earnings conference call. He said he could not predict when the enrollment numbers would begin to climb again.

Apollo, which had earlier expected new student enrollments to start growing again in the second half of the fiscal year ending August 2013, has already frozen tuition fees and boosted marketing efforts to attract students.

Cappelli said the University of Phoenix was launching new career-oriented programs, such as certificate courses, and expanding partnerships with corporate customers.

"Students require more than just one option to acquire the knowledge to compete more effectively in today's labor force," he said. "They're interested in acquiring tangible skills, which support a full degree program if desired."

He also said Apollo would also venture into new countries in the near future.

NO CATALYST FOR GROWTH

Excluding one-time items, Apollo posted net earnings of 34 cents per share for the second quarter, beating Wall Street estimates of 18 cents.

Second-quarter revenue fell 13 percent to $834.4 million, but were ahead of the $822.8 million analysts had expected, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"Given how low expectations were heading into the quarter, there could be some near-term relief," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jerry Herman said.

Apollo has cut about 1,000 jobs so far in fiscal 2013, and carried out 25 percent of its planned campus closures, it said on Monday.

The company had said in October it would cut about 800 jobs and shut down 115 locations, including 25 campuses, to save costs amid declining profit and lower student enrollments.

"Efforts to regain enrollment momentum in a continued challenging overall operating environment will take time, thus the shares still lack a sustainable catalyst," Herman said.

The company expects its previously announced restructuring actions to reduce operating expenses by at least $350 million by fiscal year 2014, raising the estimate by $50 million from its earlier target.

Apollo reaffirmed its full-year earnings and revenue forecast. The stock was up 9 percent at $18.63 on the Nasdaq on Monday, having risen as much as 15 percent during the day.

A glance at the agreement for the Cyprus bailout

(AP) ? Authorities from Cyprus and the so-called troika of international lenders ? the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? reached agreement on a bailout loan for the country of up to 10 billion euros. A look at key parts of the deal:

?Cyprus had to come up with 5.8 billion euros somehow to secure the bailout.

?Depositors in the country's second-largest bank, Laiki, with accounts of more than 100,000 euros will lose an unspecified amount of their money. The move is expected to yield 4.2 billion euros overall ? or most of the needed amount.

?The remainder of the money will come from tax increases and privatizations.

?Cyprus had to agree to restructure its banking sector, which is unusually large for the size of its economy.

?Laiki will be dissolved at once and split into a "good bank" and a "bad bank." The "good bank" portion of Laiki will be folded into the largest bank, the Bank of Cyprus.
