Instagram prankster finds way into celeb pics

Pop culture

If you think celebrities are Photoshopped in many of the images they appear in, you're going to love the work of Instagram user PeejeT.

The 25-year-old, who goes by what he calls his "stage name" on the photo-sharing site and Twitter, is gaining attention and followers for his very fun ability to insert himself into events where only celebs previously existed.

@PeejeT

Instagram user PeejeT gives himself a seat next to Kim Kardashian, right, and shares a laugh with Jay-Z and Beyonce as Kanye West gets pushed back a row.

Many of his 100 or so photos have him sitting next to -- or on the lap of -- some of the leading women and men of hip-hop. And it's not a stretch to say PeejeT has a thing for Beyonce, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian in particular.

"Yeah, I am a fan of hip-hop and all of those ladies," PeejeT said via email on Thursday. "I'm sure they think I'm the weirdest dude ever."

Judging by the comments on Instagram, his 64,000 followers think he's hilarious. There he is sitting next to Kardashian at an awards show, with Kanye sulking in the background. Ever wanted to vacation with Beyonce? PeejeT took the liberty of making that happen for himself, despite the awkward presence of her husband, Jay-Z.

PeejeT is poolside with Beyonce -- take another lap, Jay-Z.

"I've gotten some replies and re-tweets from the celebs themselves. It's cool when they realize it's all in good fun," PeejeT said. "Some hardcore fans of these people do send me tweets begging me to stop followed by many frowny faces. I'm sure Jay-Z, Kanye, and Chris Brown aren't my biggest fans either ... ha!"

What makes the photos fun is a mix of the moment PeejeT chooses to insert himself into, and the relatively amateur manipulation of the photos with the editing software.

"I don't claim to be some graphic design wizard or anything," PeejeT said. "I'm just a guy that downloaded and taught myself how to use Photoshop a couple years ago thinking it would be funny to put myself in some pictures with celebs. I started doing them for something my friends and I can laugh at."

He told The Daily Dot that he chooses pics by whatever is trending on Twitter.

"For instance, when Miguel leg dropped that fan at the Billboard Music Awards everyone was talking about it so I tried to get as creative and funny with it as I can," PeejeT said. "I just love making people laugh."

And for a guy whose web identity is growing by the moment thanks to this labor of love, PeejeT preferred not to take a phone call on Thursday ... because he was "at work."

Select media outlets just say no to Eric Holder meeting

Several news organizations invited to meet this week with Attorney General Eric Holder to discuss the Justice Department's guidelines governing security leak investigations that involve reporters are refusing the invitation citing the meeting's off-the-record status.

A Justice Department official said on Wednesday that the meeting with select bureau chiefs will be off the record to "best facilitate the candid, free-flowing discussions we hope to have in order to bring about meaningful engagement."

By Thursday midday, representatives from CNN and Huffington Post had joined the Associated Press and The New York Times in deciding to boycott the meeting due to its off-the-record status.

Holder called the meetings this week as part of a department review directed by President Barack Obama after controversy over the secret seizure of Associated Press reporters' and editors' phone records and secret monitoring of Fox News reporter James Rosen.

"CNN will decline the invitation for an off-the-record meeting," the news outlet noted in its coverage of the meeting on Thursday. "A CNN spokesperson says if the meeting with the attorney general is on the record, CNN would plan to participate."

Erin Madigan White, the AP's media relations manager, said in a widely circulated statement on Wednesday that "if it is not on the record, AP will not attend and instead will offer our views on how the regulations should be updated in an open letter."

"It isn't appropriate for us to attend an off-the-record meeting with the attorney general," New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson said in a statement.

So who is going?

ABC News, a partner of Yahoo News, has confirmed its decision to send a representative. And Politico is also rejecting the boycott. "As editor in chief, I routinely have off-the-record conversations with people who have questions or grievances about our coverage or our news gathering practices," John Harris wrote in an email. "I feel anyone?whether an official or ordinary reader?should be able to have an unguarded conversation with someone in a position of accountability for a news organization when there is good reason."

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Yahoo News' request for comment on Thursday on the boycott.

Picking up a second language is predicted by ability to learn patterns

May 28, 2013 ? Some people seem to pick up a second language with relative ease, while others have a much more difficult time. Now, a new study suggests that learning to understand and read a second language may be driven, at least in part, by our ability to pick up on statistical regularities.

The study is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Some research suggests that learning a second language draws on capacities that are language-specific, while other research suggests that it reflects a more general capacity for learning patterns. According to psychological scientist and lead researcher Ram Frost of Hebrew University, the data from the new study clearly point to the latter:

"These new results suggest that learning a second language is determined to a large extent by an individual ability that is not at all linguistic," says Frost.

In the study, Frost and colleagues used three different tasks to measure how well American students in an overseas program picked up on the structure of words and sounds in Hebrew. The students were tested once in the first semester and again in the second semester.

The students also completed a task that measured their ability to pick up on statistical patterns in visual stimuli. The participants watched a stream of complex shapes that were presented one at a time. Unbeknownst to the participants, the 24 shapes were organized into 8 triplets -- the order of the triplets was randomized, though the shapes within each triplet always appeared in the same sequence. After viewing the stream of shapes, the students were tested to see whether they implicitly picked up the statistical regularities of the shape sequences.

The data revealed a strong association between statistical learning and language learning: Students who were high performers on the shapes task tended to pick up the most Hebrew over the two semesters.

"It's surprising that a short 15-minute test involving the perception of visual shapes could predict to such a large extent which of the students who came to study Hebrew would finish the year with a better grasp of the language," says Frost.

According to the researchers, establishing a link between second language acquisition and a general capacity for statistical learning may have broad implications.

"This finding points to the possibility that a unified and universal principle of statistical learning can quantitatively explain a wide range of cognitive processes across domains, whether they are linguistic or nonlinguistic," they conclude.

This research was supported by the Israel Science Foundation (159/10) and by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (RO1 HD 067364 and PO1HD 01994).

Syria fighting rages, more chemical attacks reported

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Heavy fighting raged around the strategic Syrian border town of Qusair and the capital Damascus on Monday and further reports surfaced of chemical weapons attacks by President Bashar al-Assad's forces on rebel areas. Intensified government offensives are widely seen as a bid to strengthen Assad's position before a peace conference proposed by the United States and Russia for next month.

Three Lebanese soldiers killed near Syria border

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Gunmen killed three Lebanese soldiers at an army checkpoint in the eastern Bekaa Valley on Tuesday before fleeing towards the Syrian border, Lebanese officials said. It was not clear who carried out the attack, which is the latest incident in a frontier region which has been increasingly drawn into the violence in neighboring Syria.

Nigerian army says kills three Islamists in Boko Haram crackdown

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian soldiers have killed three members of Islamist militant sect Boko Haram and arrested 25 more in the northeast, the army said on Tuesday, two weeks after the launch of a major ground and air offensive to crush the group's four-year rebellion. President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three northeast states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa on May 14 and ordered thousands of additional troops to the area where Boko Haram has established bases and weapons dumps.

Afghan police defectors return to fold, kill seven colleagues

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Two Afghan police officers who had recently rejoined the force after defecting to the Taliban, shot dead seven of their sleeping colleagues on Tuesday, a police chief said. The killings came during a particularly bloody 24 hours for Afghan forces, with another 16 soldiers, police and bodyguards killed in different attacks, underscoring concern about government forces as foreign troops prepare to leave.

Chinese hackers access major weapons systems: Washington Post

WASHINGTON/CANBERRA (Reuters) - Chinese hackers have gained access to designs of more than two dozen major U.S. weapons systems, a U.S. report said on Monday, as Australian media said Chinese hackers had stolen the blueprints for Australia's new spy headquarters. Citing a report prepared for the Defense Department by the Defense Science Board, the Washington Post said the compromised U.S. designs included those for combat aircraft and ships, as well as missile defenses vital for Europe, Asia and the Gulf.

Insight: Syrian village gives up secrets after dawn killings

BAIDA, Syria (Reuters) - Awakened by the sound of gunfire, Ahmad could hear the armed men knocking on his brother's door, shouting insults and calling the family "dogs". Ahmad's sister-in-law said the gunmen told her husband to "bow to your god, Bashar" -- the Syrian president. She and her husband and their two teenage sons were dragged towards the village square.

African neighbors to help fund Zimbabwe vote: Mugabe

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said regional leaders will hold a summit to discuss how to fund an election later this year in which he is seeking to extend his three-decade rule, state media reported on Tuesday. Impoverished Zimbabwe needs $132 million for the election but conditions attached to the cash have divided the already fractious unity government, whose main players will be rivals for power in the vote.

Greece's ruling conservatives extend lead in opinion polls

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's ruling conservatives have widened their lead over anti-austerity opponents, three polls showed, in a sign that improving business sentiment has bolstered support for the crisis-ridden country's government. A survey by GPO pollsters for Mega TV released on Tuesday put support for the New Democracy party at 21.3 percent, 1.8 percent ahead of the leftist Syriza party, which opposes Greece's international bailout.

Pirates kidnap crew off Nigerian coast: security sources

ABUJA (Reuters) - Armed pirates attacked an oil products tanker off the coast of Nigeria in West Africa and abducted an unknown number of crew, security sources said on Tuesday. Increasing piracy in the Gulf of Guinea region, which includes Africa's No. 1 oil producer Nigeria and is a significant source of cocoa and metals for world markets, is jacking up costs for shipping firms operating there.

Austria says peacekeepers to stay on Golan for now

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria retracted a threat to pull 380 peacekeepers from the U.N. buffer zone between Syria and Israel, saying on Tuesday that only Britain and France - not the whole European Union - were ready to arm Syrian rebels. Vienna had led efforts to extend an EU arms embargo on Syria, arguing that sending more weapons to the region would only fan the fighting, dash hopes for a peace deal and make Austrian peacekeeping troops potential targets for retribution.

Rare species perform unique roles, even in diverse ecosystems

May 28, 2013 ? A new study, published 28 May in the open access journal PLOS Biology, has revealed the potential importance of rare species in the functioning of highly diverse ecosystems. Using data from three very different ecosystems -- coral reefs, tropical forests and alpine meadows -- a team of researchers led by David Mouillot at the University of Montpellier 2, France, has shown that it is primarily the rare species, rather than the more common ones, that have distinct traits involved in unique ecological functions. As biodiversity declines, these unique features are therefore particularly vulnerable to extinction because rare species are likely to disappear first.

"These unique features are irreplaceable, as they could be important for the functioning of ecosystems if there is major environmental change," explained Dr Mouillot.

Biodiverse environments are characterized by a large number of rare species. These rare species contribute to the taxonomic richness of the area, but their functional importance in ecosystems is largely unknown. Represented by few individuals or distributed over narrow geographic areas, rare species are generally considered to have little influence on the functioning of an ecosystem compared with more common species. Indeed, it is often assumed that they fulfill the same ecological roles as those of common species but have less impact because of their low abundance; a phenomenon known as 'functional redundancy'. This redundancy suggests that rare species merely serve as an "insurance" policy for the ecosystem, in the event of an ecological loss.

To test this, the team of researchers analyzed the extent to which rarer species in the three different ecosystems performed the same ecological functions as the most common ones. They examined biological and biogeographical information from 846 reef fish, 2979 alpine plants and 662 tropical trees and found that most of the unique and vulnerable functions, carried out via a combination of traits, were associated with rare species.

Examples of such species supporting vulnerable functions include the giant moray (Gymnothorax javanicus), a predatory fish that hunts at night in the labyrinths of coral reefs; the pyramidal saxifrage (Saxifraga cotyledon), an alpine plant that is an important resource for pollinators; and Pouteria maxima, a huge tree in the rainforest of Guyana, which is particularly resilient to fire and drought. Not only are they rare but they have few functional equivalents among the more common species in their respective ecosystems.

"Our results suggest that the loss of these species could heavily impact upon the functioning of their ecosystems," said Dr Mouillot. "This calls into question many current conservation strategies."

The work emphasizes the importance of the conservation of rare species, even in diverse ecosystems. Rare species are more vulnerable and serve irreplaceable functions, explained Dr Mouillot: the preservation of biodiversity as a whole -- not just the most common species, but all those who perform vulnerable functions -- appears to be crucial for the resilience of ecosystems.

"Rare species are not just an ecological insurance," he said. "They perform additional ecological functions that could be important during rapid transitions experienced by ecosystems. The vulnerability of these functions, in particular biodiversity loss caused by climate change, highlights the underestimated role of rare species in the functioning and resilience of ecosystems. Our results call for new experiments to explicitly test the influence of species rarity and the uniqueness of combinations of traits on ecological processes." This line of research will also inform the lively debate about the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

Asia stocks post muted gains on improving US data

BANGKOK (AP) ? Rising U.S. consumer confidence and home prices painted a picture of a rebounding economy, helping Asian stock markets to post muted gains Wednesday.

Wall Street resumed its record-breaking rally on Tuesday after the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller survey found that U.S. home prices rose 10.9 percent in March, the most since April 2006. On top of that, the Conference Board in Washington reported consumer confidence rising to a five-year high.

"Market sentiment was given a lift overnight with the US consumer confidence index coming in higher than expected and the house price indices showing stronger gains, indicating a strong underlying momentum in the economy in the face of fiscal restraint," said Anthony Lam of Credit Agricole CIB in an email commentary.

The figures are particularly encouraging because they indicate that U.S. consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of activity in the world's largest economy, is firmly recovering.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.1 percent to 14,325.64. South Korea's Kospi advanced 0.4 percent to 1,994.93. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Indonesia, New Zealand and the Philippines also rose.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.8 percent to 22,736.03. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.1 percent to 4,965.50.

On Tuesday in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.7 percent to 15,409.39, a record high. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.6 percent to 1,660.06. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.9 percent, to 3,488.89.

Benchmark oil for July delivery fell 18 cents to $94.83 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract for the benchmark grade rose 86 cents to close at $95.01 on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2858 from $1.2876 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar rose to 102.18 from 102.08 yen.

Foxconn and Mozilla join hands over Firefox OS, new devices expected next week

In a Chinese invitation we received earlier today, Foxconn Technology Group and Mozilla confirmed an upcoming press conference that will detail and make their Firefox OS partnership official. The event will take place in Taipei next Monday (just a few days before Computex truly kicks off), and it'll see Mozilla welcome the 19th partner to its Firefox OS alliance. There isn't much meat in the email, though we did spot a little hint in the rundown that says one or more new Firefox OS products will be displayed. Whatever they may be, we shall keep an eye out for them as soon as we land in Terry Gou's back garden next week.

Doc: Face transplant patient making good progress

(AP) ? A surgeon who operated on Poland's first face transplant patient says the man is already practicing swallowing and making sounds.

The 33-year-old man received a skin-and-bone transplant on May 15, three weeks after losing his nose, upper jaw and cheeks in a workplace accident. Doctors say it was the world's fastest time frame for such an operation.

Dr. Maciej Grajek told The Associated Press on Monday the man is practicing to swallow liquids, has gotten out of bed a few times this weekend, communicates through writing and can make sounds when his tracheotomy tube ? which helps him breathe ? is closed for a moment. Grajek called that "very good progress."

The patient remains in isolation to guard against infections.

Teen planned attack: Bombs in bedroom under floorboards linked to school plot

Teen planned attack against an Oregon school with bombs hidden in bedroom, a prosecutor says. But the plot was foiled in the same way many such plots are uncovered.

    By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / May 26, 2013

A 17-year-old student in Albany, Ore., built several bombs and had a detailed plan ? including checklists and diagrams ? as part of a Columbine-style plot to attack West Albany High School, a local prosecutor says.

No motive has yet been made public, but Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson said authorities on Friday found six kinds of explosives ? including napalm bombs, pipe bombs, drain-cleaner bombs, and Molotov cocktails ? in "a secret compartment that had been created in the floorboards" of the teen's bedroom. The teen, Grant Acord, sought make his attack bigger than Columbine, Mr. Haroldson said.

The alleged plot is just the latest example of how the Columbine massacre continues shape school safety 14 years later.

Not only does the plot suggest that would-be attackers continue to draw inspiration from Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 12 students and a teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., before committing suicide on April 20, 1999. But it also points to how such plots have been repeatedly foiled.

Authorities say they received a tip. Albany police became suspicious after they "received information that associated ... Acord with manufacturing a destructive device with the intent of detonating it at a school," Haroldson said, according to a CNN report.?

With students more alert for signs of potential attacks post-Columbine, tips have been crucial to preventing more Columbines.

    • In 2001, A suspicious note passed along by a friend led police in Elmira, N.Y., to find a high-school senior in the cafeteria with a pistol, 18 bombs, and a sawed-off shotgun, according to media reports.
    • Three years later, a tip about an Internet chat in which a student said he was planning to attack his school led to a stash of found stolen weapons, an AK-47, and Nazi literature in the student's house in Clinton Township, Mich., reports say.
    • Tips also led to the discovery of Columbine-style plots in Tampa, Fla., in 2011, and in Utah last year.

In the Utah case, the suspect actually went so far as to visit Columbine High School and interview the principal.

?To go as far as to interview the principal and physically go there ? sends a message that they were extremely committed to doing something,? Kenneth Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services in Cleveland told the Monitor at the time.

In Oregon, Grant will be charged as an adult with aggravated murder, Haroldson said. He will also face charges related to bombmaking.

?This was a very methodical process,? said Haroldson, according to a report in The Oregonian. ?He took time to even get to this point.?

The evidence gathered by police, which includes "diagrams, checklists, a plan to use explosive devices, and firearms to carry out a plan specifically modeled after the Columbine shootings" shows "intent and plans to carry out a deadly assault on a target-rich environment," he said.

Haroldson did not say when Grant planned to carry out the attack, according to ABC, but added: "I can't say enough about how lucky we are that there was an intervention. When I look at the evidence in the case, I shudder to think of what could have happened here."

Grant was arrested at his home Thursday.

Police say they have searched the school and found no devices, though a Reuters report said they are following up the initial search more thoroughly to make sure students can return to school after the Memorial Day vacation.

Jordan king says extremism 'grown fat' on conflict

SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan (AP) ? Jordan's King Abdullah II says extremism has "grown fat" off of the longstanding conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

"Good faith talks must get going," he said in Saturday remarks at the opening of a two-day meeting of the Geneva-based World Economic Forum on the shores of the Dead Sea.

He pointed to an Arab peace initiative that offers Arab recognition to Israel in exchange for land to Palestinians based on the 1967 borders. The king called on a halt to Jewish settlement construction in territories claimed by the Palestinians for a future state.

The World Economic Forum has gathered 900 participants from 23 countries to discuss Mideast economic growth.

Verizon Cloud spreads to iOS devices, Droid DNA and Galaxy S 4

When Verizon Cloud launched last month, it would only back up a few Android devices -- not quite the cross-platform utopia that the carrier had in mind. Today's launch of the Verizon Cloud iOS app should get the company (and subscribers) closer to the original vision. Like its mobile counterpart, the iPhone-focused release syncs or streams documents and media from every platform that Verizon supports, including PCs. Just don't expect a wide safety net, though, as the iOS app won't back up call logs, contacts or messages. Still prefer Android? You're covered as well -- Verizon has expanded the compatibility list to include more Google-powered hardware, such as the Droid DNA and the Galaxy S 4. As long as you're inclined toward Verizon Cloud in the first place, the source links should get all your devices working in harmony.

Egypt top court rules against religious slogans

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court ruled on Saturday against parts of an election law approved by the Islamist-led legislature that had lifted a long-standing ban on the use of religious slogans during campaigning.

The decision is the latest sign of tensions between the judiciary and President Mohammed Morsi and his Islamist allies. The courts have dealt Islamists several setbacks over the past two years, including the dissolution of parliament's lower house last year. That ruling was also issued by the Supreme Constitutional Court, which had judged the law governing its election invalid.

In its decision on Saturday, the court said that not explicitly banning religious slogans in campaigns runs counter to national unity and principles of citizenship. It said religious slogans may distract voters from focusing on the candidate's platform.

The bill will be sent back to the Shura Council, or upper house of parliament, for review. The council has temporarily assumed legislative powers in the absence of a lower house of parliament.

It was the second rebuff for the interim parliament's electoral law. The first came in March when a court ruled that the Shura Council had improperly passed the law without allowing the country's Supreme Constitutional Court to review it to ensure it conforms with the constitution. That decision annulled Morsi's decree to begin elections in April.

The Supreme Constitutional Court similarly ruled Saturday against a provision of the law that requires media outlets to give equal time to candidates, saying this violates freedom of the press.

The court also said the bill breaches the principles of separation of powers because it allows the president to set election dates and change them. Morsi had said recently elections could be held in October.

The back and forth over the law is the latest example of the power tussle between the judiciary and Morsi and his allies.

Another row is centered on a controversial law that would drop retirement age for judges from 70 to 60. This would affect nearly a quarter of the country's 13,000 judges and prosecution officials, most of them in senior positions, including in Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court.

Muslim Brotherhood lawmakers backed by other Islamists in the Shura Council pushed ahead with plans to debate the judicial reform law Saturday.

The move by the president's party and others prompted the country's top council of judges to suspend participation in a government-backed conference earlier this month. Morsi had sponsored the conference, which was meant to allow judges the chance to draft proposals on how reform the judiciary.

Morsi's allies say Egypt's judiciary is filled with supporters of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, who have worked to undermine the transition to democracy and the Islamists' rise to power.

Many judges agree in principle on the need for reform, but don't want the presidency or the legislature to carry it out. They say Morsi has tried to interfere in their affairs and curb their independence.

On Saturday, opposition lawmakers wore black sashes during the Shura Council session that read: "Illegitimate procedure. Illegitimate law."

The handful of opposition members in the Shura Council shouted "illegitimate" as the speaker of the interim parliament, Ahmed Fahmy, said the law will be debated in principle by the body's Legislative Committee. Fahmy is also a Brotherhood party member.

Dozens of protesters outside the building were led by opposition figure Hamdeen Sabahi, who placed third in the country's nationwide presidential elections last year. They accused the Shura Council itself of being illegitimate, recalling the fact that only 7 percent of the electorate voted for the body, which traditionally does not legislate. Morsi appoints a third of the council's members.

"This law is a clear attack on the judiciary and it's against the constitution," Sabahi told The Associated Press. "There's no one logical or wise reason in the nation's interest to insist on passing this law with such hastiness or even discussing it in the Shura Council."

Boy Scouts accept openly gay boys | WWAY NewsChannel 3 ...

GRAPEVINE, Texas (WWAY) -- The Boy Scouts of America National Council voted 61 percent in favor of allowing openly gay young men into the club, on Thursday.

?I don't have a problem with you being gay, but I don't want women in the Boy Scouts, I don't want gays in the Boy Scouts," Thurman Burgess, a former Wilmington Boy Scout said.

With the lift of the ban, Burgess says the organization should not be called the Boy Scouts of America any longer.

"Just say we have scouts. Let anyone in who wants to be in it, but if its boy scouts, leave it Boy Scouts,? Burgess said.

Burgess goes on to say that he also feels this decision may place Scouts at risk.

?Predators find those opportunities to ease into situations and make gays and lesbians look like they are all predators,? Burgess feels.

There are also concerns that the decision will in turn obligate the Boy Scout leaders to teach sexuality to our youth.

?We will be required to teach homosexuality to young boys, as young as six, and have to explain to them what that is. I think that sexual discussion needs to be at home with the parents,? Brad Kiser, a Cub Scout parent said.

Others support the decision and say a male?s sexuality should not be a factor in joining the 100 year old organization.

"I don't think it should be a concern of anyone else's,? Walker Payne, of Wilmington said.

Jennifer Tyrell, a former pack leader believes "it is a small step in the right direction, but huge in other ways.?

The change will be effective at the start of next year.

The decision does not reverse the ban on gay scout leaders.

ITC says Microsoft did not violate Google patent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp won a round in a complex patent war on Thursday when the International Trade Commission said the company's popular Xbox entertainment system did not violate a patent owned by Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility.

If the ITC had found that Microsoft infringed, it could have barred the Xbox from being imported into the United States.

The fight over the Xbox is related to a larger smartphone patent war between Apple, Microsoft and the mobile phone makers who use Google's Android software, including Motorola Mobility.

Motorola Mobility originally accused Microsoft of infringing upon five patents when it filed its complaint in 2010. Four were dropped in ensuing months, leaving just one - a patent which allows devices to communicate wirelessly over short distances.

"This is a win for Xbox customers and confirms our view that Google had no grounds to block our products," David Howard, a Microsoft deputy general counsel, said in a statement.

Motorola was "disappointed with this decision" and is evaluating its options, a company spokesman said in a statement.

Technology companies have spent billions of dollars to buy patent portfolios, and still more money litigating patent cases around the world.

The Xbox case has seen many twists and turns since it was filed in late 2010.

In April 2012, ITC Judge David Shaw said in a preliminary decision that Microsoft infringed four patents and did not infringe on a fifth. But instead of deciding the case, as is usual, in June 2012, the trade panel sent the case back to the judge for reconsideration.

In January, following an antitrust settlement with federal regulators, Google asked a trade panel to drop two patents from the complaint because they were essential to a standard. These types of patents ensure interoperability and get special treatment.

Google had promised the Federal Trade Commission that it would no longer request sales bans based on the infringement of standard essential patents.

By that time, just one patent remained. In March, an ITC judge said that Microsoft did not infringe that technology and recommended that the case be terminated. The full ITC followed that recommendation on Thursday.

The case is at the International Trade Commission, No. 337-752.

A New Contender For the Google Reader Crown ? EldonReader

May 22nd, 2013 by Nate Hoffelder ? No Comments ? News Reader

eldon readerTime is running out to find a replacement for Google Reader, and if you?re still looking then I have a new alternative for you.

The developers of EldonReader contacted me earlier this week. This is a brand-new, completely independent Google Reader alternative which has launched in the past few weeks. It?s still quite raw, and it is in fact missing a few basic features (importing feeds from GR, for example), but I think all options are worth looking at.

This news reader eschews the more colorful design of say Feedly in favor of a theme with muted colors, lots of white space, and a relatively uncrowded design. As you can see from the following screen shot, Eldon Reader offers a very Google Readeresque design, only without detailed info like unread post counts and without the compactness that this information junky would require.

At the moment EldonReader has but a single viewing mode which shows the full post/excerpt. For me that is going to present something of a problem, but since I can?t import my GR account I suppose the viewing mode doesn?t matter.

There?s really not too much to the app at the moment, but I am told that the developers are working to add new features. They have a road map which includes many of the features whose absence I noted above.

Eldon Reader is currently accessible in the web browser. There is also an Android app in Google Play, a Chrome app, and there are plans to release an app for the iPad and iPhone.

On a related note, if the screen shots for the Chrome app are to be believed that version of Eldon Reader has a far more magazine style layout than the Android app or the browser version. It might be worth trying if that is your thing.

South Sudan warns it may shut down oil flow again

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? South Sudan is warning that it may stop exporting oil through Sudan's pipelines again.

An official in South Sudan's oil ministry told The Associated Press that Sudan has blocked the export of South Sudanese oil. The official insisted he not be identified because he is not authorized to release the information.

While speaking at a police graduation ceremony in Juba on Monday, South Sudan President Salva Kiir warned there could be oil shutdown like the one that ended nearly two months ago. He said Juba was still working with Sudan "in a diplomatic way."

South Sudan resumed oil production in April this year, 16 months after a shutdown caused by disagreements with Sudan over oil transit fees.
