UAE oil spill causes 2km of damage

An oil spill has caused damage to 2 km of beach at Fujairah on the UAE?s east coast, according to Arabic media.

It is feared the ?thick layer? of oil will affect a major desalination plant at Qidfa as well as the area?s marine life and fishing stocks.

Fujeirah is a popular diving location and fishing is a key livelihood.

A spokesperson for the local fishing association told Al Ittihad newspaper the oil spill was caused by a ship loading and unloading its cargo off the coast of Fujairah.

He said the oil was ?as dense as a layer of bitumen? and had spread more than a 1 km, reaching the shore and causing a ?pungent smell?.

It was about 20 cm deep and the fishing association feared it would impact on stocks.

Fujairah municipality had started cleaning up the pollution and attempting to remove it, according to Al Ittihad.

Experts had been sent to inspect the site and determine how to remove the oil safely without harming the environment.

Oil spills off the coast of Fujairah have declined dramatically in the last five years with the implementation of the MARPOL Convention, which contains increased regulations on vessels and oil tankers in the area.
