JOHANNESBURG ? Managers of a South African platinum mine where police killed 34 striking workers say a breakaway union has refused to sign a deal intended to pave the way for wage negotiations and end a near monthlong strike.
A deal was signed Thursday between London-registered Lonmin PLC and the main unions.
However, a breakaway union and strikers who stopped operations have refused to sign, raising questions as to whether mining will restart soon. The Karee mine is responsible for 68 percent of Lonmin's platinum production.
Strikers Wednesday threatened to kill workers and managers who ignore their strike. They say they are not interested in the accord, only that Lonmin meets their demand for a minimum monthly salary of R12,500 ($1,560).
Lonmin spokeswoman Sue Vey said all was quiet at the mine Thursday.
