I Wear Pink: October | Indiana's NewsCenter: News, Sports, Weather ...

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) ? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and supporting breast cancer awareness is something we encourage with our ?I Wear Pink? campaign here at 21Alive.

We thought it might be a good idea to remind viewers how to make sure their donations are doing the most good.

You see awareness of breast cancer everywhere during the month of October. Everyone from business owners to football players want to get in on the campaign. But just as in the wake of a tragedy or other nationwide events, scam artists are everywhere?including sometimes at your front door.

?Never ever ever give out any personal information or credit card number over the phone. Even at the front door,? said Tracy Smith with the American Cancer Society. ?Just ask questions?who are you with, where does the money go, how does it benefit the local community?those type of questions. The person soliciting should be able to answer those questions without hesitation and should be transparent as we are here at the American Cancer Society.?

Another good question to ask is, what percentage of the donation actually goes to the mission of the organization? For the American Cancer Society, 100 percent of your donation to Making Strides goes to awareness, prevention, and patient services such as the ?Look Good Feel Good? program or the Reach to Recovery program. But you should also be able to designate where you want your donation to go. If the person asking for money says you can?t, that should raise a red flag.

?Go visit the local office of where ever that charity is. There should be a number for you to be able to call and speak to someone and say that a representative came to my door and I want to know is this a legitimate business? What are you fundraising for? How are you assisting the community?? said Smith.

If you have any doubts about the organization, call the Better Business Bureau.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 31, Studio 13 Tattoo is offering custom breast cancer awareness tattoos. Half the proceeds from the sale of the tattoos will be donated to the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center. Tattoos are available at both Studio 13 locations, 4720 Parnell Avenue and 1932 S. Calhoun St. They?re open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

In order to raise awareness for breast cancer and show its support for the ?I Wear Pink? campaign, the City of Fort Wayne illuminated the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge pink Sunday night.

And, if you call on the Fort Wayne Fire Department this week, you might find yourself in a sea of pink!

Firefighters were given the opportunity to buy a pink t-shirt in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and from the looks of things they really got into the spirit. Apparently, the new color for "tough guys" is pink!

According to breastcancer.org, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Although the survival rate for women with breast cancer has gone up, it is still important to get checked for early detection.
