New Orleans firefighters are working a five-alarm fire in Treme. The fire broke out at the corner of Claiborne and Esplanade avenues about 4:15 p.m., according to a New Orleans Fire Department dispatcher.

The fire has spread to several residences along North Robertson between Esplanade Avenue and Kerlerec Street, as embers from the original blaze fly. Firefighters are pouring water on houses downwind from the original fire as embers continue to ignite rooftops.

Neighbors said the building seemed to have been abandoned.

"I've seen a lot of homeless people in that house all the time," said Shannon LeBlanc. "I pass them going on the way to grocery store."

Another bystander, Shannon Posey, said she was walking by the fire and heard a scream.

"The woman was screaming for help but the fire was so bad, nobody went inside," Posey said. "Then she stopped screaming. I don't know whether the screaming was inside the house or not."

Rush-hour traffic is bumper-to-bumper on the nearby elevated Interstate.
