Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett said his ex-wife Allison Beaver misused campaign finances, and said he only used that money for legitimate campaign purposes.
Mayor Burchett's accusation comes after a complaint made about his campaign's finances. In a recent affidavit Mayor Burchett filed with the state, he focused all the blame on his ex-wife.
Tennessee Bureau of Ethics and Campaign Finance is looking into how Burchett's campaign money was recorded and spent.
A Knoxville News Sentinel columnist filed a complaint with the ethics board over the summer. The mayor's affidavit filed last week states all the checks he wrote were for legitimate campaign purposes.
Burchett, however, does admit that his ex-wife transferred money from his campaign account into her personal account. He admitted that he should have had greater oversight into that financial process because he was the candidate.
The committee is scheduled to discuss the matter further in Nashville on Tuesday. Mayor Burchett said he does not plan to attend.
