The Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with key health stakeholders will hold a 3-day National Conference on Family Planning at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja between November 27 and 30, 2012.? This year?s conference is the second of its kind after the first National Family Planning held in November 2010.
According to the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2008, Nigeria has a high total fertility rate (TFR) of 5.7 but there is a low contraceptive rate of 14.62% for any method and 9.7% for modern methods. The report reveals that 20 percent of the childbearing Nigerians who want to use family planning services do not have access to it.
The conference, with the theme: ?Population and National Development? will address recent claims of unmet needs for family planning commodities and focus on improving access to Family Planning information and services in Nigeria.
To achieve its goal, the conference will strive to create a platform for dialogue and understanding among key Family Planning Stakeholders in Nigeria, reposition Family Planning in Nigeria as a tool for national development and security, and energize relevant government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in a renewed effort to reposition family planning in national planning and development.
The conference will also highlight the strong link between Family Planning and improvement in maternal and child health, and overall quality of life. It will serve as a platform for advocating for increased funding commitments for family planning in Nigeria.
Population and national development is central to achieving the Millennium Development Goals aimed at reducing maternal mortality, providing universal basic education, reducing poverty and hunger, and achieving gender equality.
Nigeria needs to plan for its citizens and this cannot be achieved if there is no proper family planning or child spacing measures to address future explosion of population.
The Second National Family Planning Conference is being organized by the Federal Ministry of Health, Family Planning Action Group, Gates Foundation, UNFPA, USAID, DFID, SFH, NURHI and other key stakeholders
