Syracuse Conference to Address Issues
The Coalition Against Gambling in New York (CAGNY) opposes all forms of predatory gambling, including casino gambling, whether operated by Native Americans, commercial gambling interests, or government. The statewide coalition bases its opposition on research demonstrating the harmful impact of gambling on the economies of the state and the host communities, and the devastating effects of gambling on families and individuals. According to CAGNY, the introduction of commercial casino gambling in New York could destroy the lives of tens of thousands of individuals and families.
CAGNY is also fighting the misinformation that it labels as industry propaganda that spuriously presents gambling as bringing prosperity and jobs while causing minimal harm. CAGNY intends to disseminate research that presents the issue of gambling in a realistic light. Meanwhile, gambling interests have now spent $47 million In New York State on lobbying and campaign contributions.
On December 6, CAGNY will host a conference in Syracuse, NY, with a panel of state and national experts to present current research on the gambling issue to legislators, the general public, and the media. CAGNY promises that what will be presented at this conference is information critical to effective public policy development.
CAGNY will hold a press conference at 9:00 a.m., to precede the conference which begins at 10:00, and invites all media representatives to the event.
In announcing the conference, Joel S. Rose, CAGNY Chairperson, said, ?Important public policy decisions should not be based on irrelevancies like ?We already have gaming,? or on false promises of economic development. And we cannot simply ignore the thousands of lives ruined each year by gambling. We all need to take a hard look at this issue before the constitutional amendment process continues. This conference will provide an opportunity to do that.?
CAGNY Vice Chairperson Stephen Q. Shafer added, ?An outstanding group of highly informed speakers have agreed to join us at this conference. I hope many of our fellow citizens will share what they learn at this conference with their elected officials, as well as with their communities, in a variety of media.?
According to CAGNY, gambling can be one of the most destructive dynamics that can be introduced into a community. Compulsive gambling leads to many thousands of personal bankruptcies each year, lost homes, broken families, domestic violence, child abuse, and a dramatic increase in crime, including embezzlement. It is strongly correlated with mental illness and with alcohol and drug use and abuse. Every state that has legalized gambling has found subsequent dramatic increases in the incidence of compulsive gamblers, and in crime, family dysfunction, divorce, bankruptcy, and mental illness.
A registration flier is available with detailed information about the conference at http://CAGNYinf.org/Conference20121206/Flier.pdf, or for further information, contact Joel Rose at 716-491-0305.
