Raise your hand if you're still scratching your head about Jodie Foster's rambling, heartwarming, intimate and just a tiny bit crazy speech Sunday night at the Golden Globes. (Who else is going to comment on Honey Boo Boo, privacy in the 21st century and coming out or not coming out, and dictate a love letter to her ailing mother all in one go?)
Now raise your hand if you've noticed that when it comes to interviews and speeches, the 50-year-old Academy Award winner has always been refreshingly unpredictable. From rapping Eminem at a college graduation ceremony to empathizing with some of Hollywood's youngest stars, Foster has said it all. Foster pulled a surprise move when she not only slammed the media for making the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal a tabloid cover story, <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/08/15/jodie-foster-blasts-kristen-stewart-robert-pattinson-break-up-spectacle.html">she penned an entire essay</a> about it for The Daily Beast. "If I were a young actor or actress starting my career today in the new era of social media and its sanctioned hunting season, would I survive? Would I drown myself in drugs, sex, and parties? Would I be lost?" On Stewart, she wrote: "I grew to love that kid? I was pregnant at the time and found myself daydreaming of the child I might have soon. Would she be just like Kristen? All that beautiful talent and fearlessness? would she jump and dunk and make me so proud?"
?He?s not saintly, and he?s got a big mouth, and he?ll do gross things your nephew would do," Foster told The Hollywood Reporter <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jodie-foster-mel-gibson-i-167894">about longtime friend Mel Gibson</a>, whom she cast in the 2011 film "The Beaver." "But I knew the minute I met him that I would love him the rest of my life? God, I love that man." "I know him in a very complex way. He?s a real person; he?s not a cardboard cutout. I know that he has troubles, and when you love somebody you don?t just walk away from them when they are struggling.?
"I really felt for Haley Joel Osment," the<a href="http://www.oocities.org/jodiefosterph/us050800.html"> actress told Us Weekly in 2000</a> about the young "Sixth Sense" actor's Oscar nomination. "Haley was a total basket case. I told him that when I was 12 and I lost at the Oscars, I broke out in hives all over my face. Huge red welts. I guess there was a part of me that was really disappointed, but I would never have been able to show it. So I think this kid is great, because he's able to say, 'I'm disappointed.' My friend [Russell Crowe] who was with me at the Golden Globes said to him, 'C'mon, man. You lost to Tom Cruise.' Then he cheered up: 'Yeah, Tom Cruise.'"
Much to the surprise of everybody, the Yale graduate quoted lyrics from Eminem during a commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006."You better lose yourself in the music, the moment. You own it, you better never let it go. You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime," she sang.
The actress<a href="http://www.esquire.com/features/what-ive-learned/meaning-of-life-2011/jodie-foster-interview-0111"> told Esquire magazine in a December 2010 interview</a>: "You couldn't pay me to be in my twenties again. I didn't know that I was ever going to be successful. I didn't know if I would be able to ever afford a place to live. I didn't know if I would take care of my family. These seem like dumb questions when you're forty-five. But when you're twenty-three, all these are just a bunch of question marks ahead of you. I can't live with that anxiety."
"What we know about everyday life is that it gets heavier and heavier as life goes on," <a href="http://www.examiner.com/article/jodie-foster-interview-her-new-film-surviving-depression-motherhood-and-fame">Foster told the Examiner </a>in 2011, opening up about having suffered from depression. "There's a lot of tragedy mixed in with the comedy of our life and many of us, myself included, go through these moments of spiritual crisis where they feel alone, terribly alone."
The 50-year-old actress made what sounded like an official coming out at the 2013 Golden Globes, but it wasn't that at all. Instead, she said: ?So while I?m here being all confessional, I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I?ve never really been able to air in public... But I?m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I?m going to need your support on this. I am single. Yes I am, I am single. No, I?m kidding ? but I mean I?m not really kidding, but I?m kind of kidding. I mean, thank you for the enthusiasm. Can I get a wolf whistle or something??
